"The most elegant wine in the range with its superbly expressive and perfumed nose of airy red berry fruit that serves as the perfect introduction to the strikingly detailed, understated and pure flavors that seemed chiseled directly from liquid limestone on the linear finish. This is like rolling rocks around in your mouth with Zen like harmony as a kicker. An exceptionally impressive wine with driving energy and this should be a 20+ year wine.
Ghislaine Barthod describes the 2006 vintage as one where "it was important to wait to harvest. We had significant hail damage in certain parcels so it was frankly critical to wait to find the right harvest date because the grapes have to be ripe but not too ripe. The ripening wasn't necessarily even within bunches either so we were constantly looking and evaluating and this was harder than it might otherwise seem as some vineyards were hit by the hail and some weren't. The storm's path took it through Musigny, Amoureuses, Charmes, Beaux Bruns and then down through the villages level vineyards below. Beaux Bruns in particular was thrashed as we lost a good 35%. Thankfully the late September weather held and gave us the ability to wait and we didn't begin picking until the 25th of September. There was some sorting work though the hail was early enough that most of the affected berries dried up and eventually fell off naturally. We ultimately realized normal yields with sugars that ranged between 12 and 12.8%. Because we waited to pick, I felt as though we obtained very good phenolic ripeness and so there was no reason in my view to baby the vinification and I pushed the material as I normally would. As to the wines themselves, they're fruity but not simple or obvious and they have superb transparency. They remind me of finer 2000s with better tension and detail." Barthod has again outperformed the vintage, having crafted outstanding 2006s and simply knockout 2005s. If you're not familiar with these wines, it's time you made their acquaintance - you'll thank me if you like ultra pure and understated Chambolle."
