Girolamo Dorigo Pignolo di Buttrio Colli Orientali del Friuli 2003
$99.99
Robert Parker - 90 points
"Dorigo’s 2003 Pignolo di Buttrio is a powerhouse. This unyielding, intense behemoth is packed with backward super-ripe dark fruit and equally imposing tannins. With air, notes of sweet toasted oak, chocolate and licorice emerge from the glass and the wine becomes a little more approachable. If the tannins soften somewhat this may ultimately merit a higher score but I am not sure it will ever be an especially elegant wine. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015.
Dorigo is located in Buttrio, in the province of Udine. The estate produces a variety of wines, although it is most famous for its reds. Today Pignolo has become a trendy variety to produce, but it was Dorigo who rescued this once nearly-forgotten grape from obscurity years ago. The estate’s Bordeaux-inspired Montsclapade is also often among the region’s top reds."
Region: Friuli, Italy
Grape(s): Pignolo
